Reading I is a reading course designed to help the student become more proficient in reading and comprehending the printed word. Books from the Pathways reading program as well as many other supplementary reading materials will be used.

The focus of Vocabulary I will be to increase the students’ vocabulary using TOEFL test prep books. Vocabulary words will also be taken from books used in their reading class.

Writing/Grammar I is a course designed to increase the international students’ ability to write using the conventional forms of English. Students will be introduced to the 6+1 writing traits to familiarize them with the concepts taught in the regular English classes.

This is the second core course for students whose first language is not English. The course includes intermediate reading, paragraph writing, grammar and sentence structure.

This course will focus on developing your English conversation skills by improving your ability to initiate and sustain a conversation in English, and to help you feel more confident in doing so.

This IS Level II class is designed to enhance the international students’ ability to read, comprehend and speak the English language. One of the goals is to assist the student in becoming fluent enough in English, thereby removing this as a potential barrier to their speaking to any staff or student on the HMA campus.

This course is designed to increase the international students’ ability to write using the conventional forms of English grammar as well as improve their understanding of the English language as used in different types of literature. Using writers’ workshop and sample questions from the TOEFL and SAT tests, students will be given multiple opportunities to practice writing so that they become more comfortable with the writing process.

IS Religion I and II is a course designed to introduce international students to Jesus Christ. Lessons taught will tie into the theme “Jesus Loves Me” as well as the theme for the year, “A New Creation.”

International Studies | Religion

IS Religion III is designed to be a basic introduction into the five major worldviews (materialism, pantheism, appeasement theism, deterministic theism, benevolent theism) and how they impact the world today. Acquire a better understanding of the origin, inspiration, and purpose of the Bible. Gain knowledgeof the Bible’s central theme, of God’s original purpose for the world, of the rise of the great controversy and of the work of redemption.
